Racing Mates is a vital peer support initiative established by Racing NSW in 2016, empowering mates to look out for mates. Research has consistently demonstrated that effective support offered by peers and colleagues can aid significantly in coping with stress and difficult situations.

While having access to clinical psychologists, professional counsellors, and crisis assistance hotlines is essential—and these services are fully available—people are often far more likely to initially reach out to a trusted peer or colleague for support. The program's appointed Ambassadors do not provide specialised counselling; rather, they serve as a trusted port of call when industry participants are simply in need of a mate.

Possessing a wealth of industry knowledge, these Ambassadors are uniquely positioned to relate to the multi-faceted and distinct concerns that racing participants experience. This deep, industry-specific expertise combined with accredited training ensures Ambassadors provide a crucial, empathetic link between those in need and professional support pathways.

Validating the profound success of this grassroots framework, Racing Mates was officially announced as the Winner of the prestigious Leadership in Workplace Psychosocial Safety Award at the 2026 WayAhead Mental Health Matters Awards. Sponsored and supported by the Mental Health Commission of NSW and NSW Health, this landmark accolade celebrates ten years of dedicated trackside service and firmly establishes the program as a benchmark-setting pillar of workplace safety, community sustainability, and proactive mental health advocacy.
